It would be good place to take your son, they let kids hunt on the cheap. 50 bucks or so for a youth license.
There is some pretty rough terrain up here

Yea if I get to Ohio I want some ag ground with mostly rolling terrain. We had some steep bluffs on our Illinois lease and little to no deer sign on that 100 acres. Bummer

Yeah not sour at all about it. Those folks are good enough to offer us something up that would cost us a fortune to do through an outfitter. I Didnt even know the deer existed til I got home I had set my goals at 140+. the guy who killed him is a die hard hunter, which is atypical for up there. Most locals just do the shotgun drive thing.....kinda glad he didn't go out like that . They estimated him at 5.5.

You're doing the right thing going there. I've told myself for a long time to put in and get the points, but my problem is finding someone to go. I have a buddy that has been 3 times with an outfitter. 4500 the first time, then they worked out a deal that my buddy put carpet in his lodge (he owns a flooring company) and he hunted for free, then last year, he paid 5K to hunt.

I can't justify that for a deer.

The guy on the LFTT that killed the 220 in Kansas, Jimmy Wall (page 14 of part 3), lives around Dawsonville and is friends of a coworker. They have been with that outfitter for years and go out and help him with stands and other stuff and get to hunt for free. That is a good deal and he has killed some monsters out there.

Heck, I didn’t even know locals even bowhunted up there. The guy that killed him must be a serious hunter. Did he use a crossbow? Seems like every farmer in Illinois rides around with a crossbow in their truck these days

I'd love to do that but all my extra deer hunting money goes into my farm. I bet I spend 5k a year in plots fuel. seed fertilizer. taxes etc. I own it though so it seems more like an investment.

I'd rather do what you're doing.
