I’m curious how they’d do with a different bullet but your experience doesn’t sound too hot.

Yeah I don't like tracking and I like knowing i hit one when I shoot. Thanks for the input guys made my decision easier. It's coming down to a 308 or a 7mm I'm thinking just thought I might like to try a different caliber

I wouldn't mind a short mag for my next purchase. Not sure what caliber yet. Maybe the new .26 nosler if not a short mag

I've got a 300WSM and a 270WSM, 300 is a Browning and the 270 is a Tikka.

They will both knock their dicks in the dirt with equal enthusiam

My 300 is a short mag browning that I love so much, almost tempted to get a 7mm short mag

What about a 260 or 280? Anyone have any experience with these?

I just put together a pretty sweet model 700 308. Probably my last gun for a while.

260 is reportedly great and that or a 6.5 Creedmoor may be my next. Iíve got a 280 ackley which is narrowly between a 280 and a 7 mag. I love mine. Personally I might choose a 280 over 7 mag because handloading belted magnums can be a hassle but theyíre close enough I donít think a deer will notice. Honestly itís overkill for deer but my 280 and 7 mag are like lightning.

Iíve got a 6.5-284 which is a little faster than a 260 and it kills them fast as well. I donít think you can buy factory amp for it but someone probably loads for it by now. Very flat shooting round.

I love my 308 but less than impressed with it on longer shots. You need faster opening bullets because itís kind of a slower round compared to many. Definitely not impressed with the Barnes tsx in game but they are accurate. I think theyíre just a little too tough and slow opening personally.

.260 is excellent. 120gr AccuTip is like flipping a switch at woods ranges. It does well out on clear cuts, too, in that you get plenty of penetration and good blood trails. I'd still hunt one except I finally got my hands on a Browning 25 WSSM. Same deal there in a handier package.

Really, though, if you're concerned about hammering them like a .300, but less kick, you should look at going up in diameter while down in powder capacity. That is the role the .35 Whelen, .338 Federal, .358 Winchester, etc were developed to fill.
