Default Had a good weekend.

Decided to stay around the house to hunt the opener. Drug myself out of bed at 0330. Grabbed some coffee and drove to a gate on the national forest. Had a couple of guys pull in behind me then leave. After 4 cups of coffee, it was time to stroll into the wilds of GA to hunt the very best game bird in our great country.

Made it to my listening spot and... listened. Wasn’t too long a gobble made it’s way through the chorus of cardinals, whippoorwill’s, and chuck wills. I knew where he was and started to ease my way down towards him. He was gobbling good on his own, and as I drew closer, I noticed he wasn’t alone. Two gobblers.

I found a good tree, got situated, and let them know I was there. They flew down immediately. I cut at them and they went nuts. Wasn’t more than a minute when both of them crested the lip of the ridge and came trotting right down the barrel of my 20ga. I let them get to 30 or so yards and stopped them. Thought I was going to get a two for one shot deal, but only the lead bird dropped... lol

The other one zigged zagged right on out of there. I was surprised to find the gobbler had a leg band! Thought that was pretty cool! I called it a day.

Sunday am was a washout. After the rain moved out, I decided to visit another section of NF. I figured nobody would be there. I was correct. I got there around
1pm. Around 3pm, I stopped to call down into a creek bottom. I cut and I swore a gobbler cut me off, but wasn’t positive. I trusted my instincts and grabbed a
tree. I sat silent for 5 minutes. I clucked and scratched the leaves. He hammered just below the lip of the ridge 30yds out. Flipped the safety. I heard him drumming and his fan came up over the ridge. He strutted up slightly to my left. I let him get up to 20yds before I clucked at him. He dropped out of strut, and I dropped him. It was a little after 3pm.

A very enjoyable opening weekend!
