Red face Missed

We sat up for the afternoon hunt just off the side of one the gravel roads in our compartment. Tons of turkey sign in the area. We sat there an hour or so just listening. James struck a gobbler with some nice purrs and a soft yelp about 4pm Saturday that gave us one cluck back. James said "thats a gobbler, be ready". The bird came in silent about 20 minutes later to my left and stuck his head up over the ridge and was staring us down. James whispered "there he is to you left, shoot him!" Well, I wasnt positioned left. The bird got edgy and started to turn and run, I swung around real fast and pretty much sure I shot right over his head as he ran off. He flew up about 100 feet up into a pine three and started tree hopping.

When I shot, I didnt know if it was a Jake or a Tom. All I saw was that periscope head peeking above the little ridge, staring me down. I knew it was a male bird and thats all that mattered. Once the bird took to flight i could see it was no Jake at all but a big beautiful Tom with a full fan.

I blew it That is the first bird Ive missed so far but I learned a lesson on hunting non gobbling afternoon birds. I probably should have just sat still and let him go on to the decoy in hopes he would strut so I could get positioned on him. Hell I dont know. Ive played it over in my head a thousand times already. Just sorry it didnt result in a dead turkey and hope ol Jimmy G aint too frustrated with me.

Thanks for your help pal. I had a good time this weekend nonetheless
