Default Back from MT

Dad I just got back from Montana. We had a great trip even though we didn't kill anything. We saw a ton of elk, but they are hard as hell to catch up with. At one point, we were watching a bull with some cows in a bottom. We made out way around the side of the hill to within 250 yards, All the cows and two spikes made their way to our left and then cut to the right through an opening. We saw the bull coming, but apparently he just kept going to the left. We set up on the same herd several times, but the more we thought we had them figured out the more they showed up we didn't. We spent one afternoon under a pine tree top that you could obviously tell another critter had been unitizing as well. Our guide said bears and big mule deer will often hold up in spots like that to get out of the wind.

Very tough hunting, but I'd recommend that you all give it a shot if you can. We hunted in (8 miles), and each day was 4-5 miles worth of hiking/hunting. One day I'll go back and hopefully have different results.

Here are some pics.

Our guide had some crazy hair...he hasn't cut it since 1986. The meadow in the first picture is where we saw the majority of the activity. We watched a huge 7x7 literally push a 6x7 down that hill into the pines. Pretty cool watching them fight.

Here's a picture of camp, the bear blind, and our guide and a buddy of his who camps on the next ridge. That old man packs a tent the size of the one we slept in and all his provisions in on his back at 82 years young.

Backcountry is the way to go. You can go to the ranches and some other places, but to me this is way to do it. I spent a bunch of time on forums reading and drilling down the outfitters to find the ones that offered the kind of hunts we wanted. Huntfish had a lot of good advice as well.

Awesome man, cool story and pics. That guide looks like you'd see him in Jamaica or Denver lol. Bet he was cool to hunt with!

Sorry you didn't get to let the big knife eat but there will be whitetailed's this season to come!

Looks like a great hunt Mack. Watching two Royals (Not KC but 6 point bulls) go at it is not something folks get to see often. Obviously you were in the area.
