Default April fooled them...

Ryan and I talked a few times this week and set it up to hook up this morning and go to a friend of his land in Greene co we used to lease. I got off at 11:00 last night and couldn't sleep, so I just stayed up

I got to the Waffle House in Madison, because that's where good hunts always start
We were meeting at 5:30 so when I got there and Ryan wasn't there, I hollered at him on the phone. No answer...I hit him again a few minutes later.. Same result...same results as most gobblers lately I figured he'd overslept, so I got an order scrambled and a sausage and witnessed to a waitress

About 6:10, I decided to run down to my Shadydale land. I'd never seen any turkey sign to amount to much, but you never know. Nothing at all sounding off at daylight, around 8:00 I thought I heard one off 450 yds or so on the neighbors land, so I slipped down even with him on a creek bottom we share, and he gobbled 150 yds or so off the property line on the ground. I tried to wait a few as it seemed he was heading toward our land, but nothing... I cut a few times, still nothing. He gobbled at some crows heading back up to their foodplot....I went up that way.... Nothing.

Ryan called, said if nothing else we could hunt at his house...

I got over there and we hit out prospecting. Good fresh burn... We hit several high spots and nada.... The wind was picking up, so we concentrated on some low spots. Lots of mud and a fresh fire break, we finally cut some fresh tracks Fresh burn next to a big green field that gets some afternoon strutting action.

Ryan has a nice hen decoy that we threw up in a sunny spot in the burn between the bottom and the field. We got set up and Ryan stated cutting on a custom slate he has, Howe I think... I heard a hen cut back a short pop or two..We started listening sharp and he hit it again and a gobbler fired off 125 yds or so into some pines. We got pointed the right way, gave it a minute and he hit them again....double gobble...Two birds!!!! They came across the firebreak, logging road and keyed right in on the deke. I am using a scope this year, and dialed in on the first, and only, one I saw. Ryan kept whispering shoot!! But we were at different angles so I wasn't lined up

He stepped up on a log and I blasted him, I started up to go toward him, and Ryan said wait...I saw the gobbler heading off.....I thought I missed Ryan got on him and was shooting beside me.. He said watch your ears, I said shoot him...

His started flopping, I said I can't believe I missed (ettered), He said heck no, he dropped like a ton! He was behind the log and never flopped.

If it ends up like that, I'll start late every time.

Enjoyed it Ryan
