Default Dead Bird Part Tres

Drove down Sunday morning to my club in Troup, arrived with overcast and cold temps. Birds were silent and unfriendly. Saw one lone hen during the morning hunt.

The clouds finally broke and the sun appeared in the afternoon and I went and set up on a small plot surrounded by select cut pines. I had called a couple of times and heard nothing. I then caught something out of the corner of my eye and there was a big gobbler coming in quiet and searching everywhere for the hen he heard. I guess he caught me when I turned my head and we stared at one another for a few seconds. Instead of putting and running, he immediately took flight and glided all the way back down the hollow through the pines.

Knowing that he wasn't coming back, I put my vest back on and walked about a half mile to our gasline close to where I killed Monday's bird. I got set up and made a call on the trumpet. All was quiet. About 10 minutes later, I heard a gobble from down the gas line. I waited a couple of minutes and called softly with the trumpet again and the bird cut me off. I shut up and within a few minutes, he was on top of the hill looking for the hen.

I remember back in the day when Timmy Sixes said he wouldnt waste his time on no damn thunder chicken. Now he is limiting out in the first few weeks of the season every year funny how that works

Now just go ahead and admit that turkey hunting, when you have birds that wanna play, is the absolute most exciting hunting there is

They are still just a bunch of stupid birds, but I have found that I really enjoy shooting them in the head

In all seriousness, I do wish I had not been so stubborn about hunting them back in the heyday of the late 80s and early 90s when according to my Dad, his buddy and my cousin, who have all been turkey hunting nuts for many, many years, that there were tons of gobbling birds and not many people hunted them.

Good work Timmy! I had a few years where I liked turkey hunting better than deer hunting but now that my bird population is scarce it's no longer the case
