The older model polaris belt snorkels were too low. If the machine wasn't level you could get some water in it, but the newer models snorkel goes all the way up the the gas cap. As long as the gas cap is out of water its fine. You can even run it deeper for a short time, like a quick dunk. I have never had belt problems with my polaris's (I'm on my third one). As long as low range is used for 10mph, and under they will last a long time.
