Default Opening Weekend

With all of the COVID madness going on right now, my plans for opening weekend changed last minute. I typically go back home and hunt the opener with my dad on public land, but made the decision to stay home and hunt my club in McIntosh.

Opening morning, I decided to go to a small area near the swamp on the backside of my club. Most of the area was under 2'+ of water still, with the exception of the food plots that were still relatively dry. I made the gamble to set up on the food plot, but knowing one would have to be roosted in the immediate area with how much water there was.

With nothing happening at daylight, I made the move about 9 to seek dry land. Coming out, I passed a mean looking cottonmouth, confirming my decision to get out of the water.

I found a food plot on the other side of the club on the power line, put out a jake/hen decoy and got comfy. About 10:15 a lone gobbler came sneaking in and starting beating the mess out of my jake decoy. I reach down, pull the gun up and dropped him at 40yds.

Not a stud bird, but a double-bearded 2 year old. Dawson gave me the toy turkey last year and it continues to be my good luck charm. I'm 4/4 on my own personal hunts since he gave it to me. Thankful to get the opportunity to go with everything going on. It seems more so than ever, that we don't know what tomorrow might hold. Hoping I might get to make it out again before everything goes on lock down.

Good job! Did it come off the small property that you leased yourself?

No. It was on my main club in Townsend. I haven't seen any birds on my smaller lease so far.

That's awesome - congrats

Our opener is April 18th but I did see two hens and a gobbler at the house - hopefully they stick around
