The shaft is splined into the hub and the housing. The shaft has to be pulled either way to replace the boot. It's a great excuse to inspect the splines while you have it off. A little mud and water without thousands of miles of driving and the shaft can be cleaned and regreased. Also check your hub bearings while everything is off. The noise could easily be a hub bearing. Independent front suspension trucks are notorious eaters of hub bearings within 100 k miles
